Found a tick on your dog or cat? Don’t pull or squeeze it! Get it removed safely and correctly by Beth’s Pawfect Pet Services. I offer professional tick removal at home using the correct hook technique, along with a full coat and skin check in case there are more.
Ticks are a growing concern for pet owners across Shropshire, particularly after countryside or woodland walks around Telford, the Wrekin and the wider rural areas.

Why choose a Vet Nurse for tick removal?
While tick removal sounds simple, the method matters enormously. Squeezing or twisting incorrectly can cause further irritation or infection, especially if the head of the tick is left in.
As a Registered Veterinary Nurse, I’ve removed hundreds of ticks and know exactly what to look for. I can assess the bite site for signs of reaction or infection, and advise on your tick prevention plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the correct way to remove a tick?
The correct method is to use a tick hook or tick twister tool. You insert it around the tick’s mouthparts as close to the skin as possible, then twist gently in one direction and lift gently.
Never squeeze the ticks body, use vasoline, burn it, or pull it straight out with tweezers. These methods increase the infection risk or leaving the head behind. Can ticks transmit Lyme disease to dogs in the UK?
Yes. Lyme disease is present in the UK and is transmitted by infected ticks. The risk increases the longer a tick is attached.
Are ticks common in Telford and Shropshire?
Yes, we are surrounded by beautiful countryside, woodland areas and grassland around Telford, the Wrekin and Long Mynd are all habitats where ticks thrive. Dogs that regularly walk in these areas should be checked after every walk, particularly in spring and autumn when ticks are most active. Outdoor cats that have access to local woodlands and long grass should be checked regularly for ticks.
What tick prevention should my pet be on?
There are several effective options, including spot-on treatments, tick collars, and tablets. Some of these repel ticks, others will kill them after they have attached. The right product depends on your pet’s individual lifestyle risk. I can advise on the options and recommend you discuss the best choice with your vet.
What if part of the tick is left in the skin?
If the head of the tick remains in the skin after removal, don’t panic or dig at the skin. The area should be kept clean and monitored for signs of infection (redness, swelling or discharge). In most cases, the remaining head will be expelled naturally. However, if the site comes inflamed or infected, you should contact your vet. I’ll assess the removal site at the time of the visit and advise accordingly.
