Weight Management Support

Is your pet carrying a few extra pounds? Are you struggling to shift them despite your best efforts? Over 50% of pets in the UK are overweight or obese, and the health consequences are significant, such as joint disease, diabetes, heart problems, reduced life expectancy, and a lower quality of life. Yet weight management in pets is complicated; portion sizes, calorie density, treat habits, multi-pet households, and breed-specific needs all play a role.

Beth’s Pawfect Pet Services offers structured, clinically informed weight management support for pets in Telford and across Shropshire, going beyond generic advice to provide your pet with a real, personalised plan that works.

Why choose a Vet Nurse for weight management support?

Weight management isn’t just about feeding less. As a Registered Veterinary Nurse, I understand body condition scoring, metabolic energy requirements, the calorie content of different diets, and how conditions like hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease, or joint disease can affect weight and exercise tolerance.

I can calculate a precise daily calorie target, recommend suitable diets that include therapeutic weight loss foods, and flag if your pets’ weight issues might have an underlying medical cause that warrants investigation.

I’ll also provide the accountability and follow-up that makes the difference between a plan that works and one that doesn’t.

What’s included?

Every weight management support appointment includes:

  • Body condition score (BCS) assessment
  • Full dietary review (food, portions, treats & extras)
  • Calorie calculation and daily intake recommendation
  • Written personalised diet plan
  • Diet and brand recommendations
  • Exercise guidance for age, breed & health status
  • Follow-up weigh-in visits to track progress

Weight Program Available

Weight management is not typically resolved in a single appointment, and follow-ups are required to ensure progress in weight loss. This allows for adjustments in the weight management plan to ensure continued success. We need to monitor weight loss closely to ensure it doesn’t happen too fast but at a steady rate.

Packages are available, which include one house visit per month and email support throughout as needed. Enquire for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I know if my pet is overweight?

The best way is to use a body condition score (BCS). On a healthy dog or cat you should be able to feel the ribs easily but not see them, the waist should be visible from above, and there should be a tucked abdomen visible from the side. Different breeds will have slightly different formations, if you’re not sure, send me a message or book a consultation, I’ll assess your pets BCS during the home visit.

  2. How quickly should a pet lose weight?

Safe weight loss in pets is typically 1-2% of body weight per week. Faster than this risks muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies, and in cats, hepatic lipidosis (a serious liver condition triggered by rapid weight loss). Slow and steady is always the right approach, and I’ll adjust the plan if progress stalls or moves too fast.

  3. My dog always seems hungry on a diet, what can I do?

This is one of the most common challenges. Strategies include switching to a higher-fibre, lower-calorie food that is more filling, splitting meals into smaller, more frequent portions, using part of the daily allowance for training treats, and adding low-calorie vegetables like green beans or cucumber as snacks. I’ll give you practical strategies that work for your individual dog.

  4. Can weight loss help my dogs arthritis?

Yes, every extra kg your dog carries put additional stress on joints. Studies show that even modest weight loss (10-15% of body weight) can dramatically reduce lameness and improve the quality of life in arthritic dogs. Weight management is often one of the most impactful things you can do for a dog with joint disease, alongside veterinary treatment.

  5. Do I need my vet’s involvement in a weight management plan?

For most otherwise healthy pets, a weight management plan can begin without a vet referral. However, I always recommend letting your vet know, particularly if your pet has any underlying health conditions, as these can affect both the target weight and how the plan should be structured. I’ll liaise with your vet if there’s anything that needs medical input.
