Ultrasonic Dental Cleaning for Dogs & Cats

What if your dog or cat could have their teeth professionally cleaned, without anaesthetic, without pain and without leaving home? Dental disease affects over 80% of dogs and 70% of cats by the age of three. Traditional professional dental cleaning requires a general anaesthetic, which carries risk, cost and stress for both pet and owner. Beth’s Pawfect Pet Services is now offering the Emmi-Pet ultrasonic dental cleaning service in Telford and across Shropshire. This clinically advanced, completely pain-free alternative can be carried out in your pet’s own home.

The ultrasonic toothbrush doesn’t vibrate or scrub; instead, it uses ultrasonic micro-vibrations (96 million per minute) transmitted through a specialist toothbrush to break down plaque and tartar and target the bacteria that can cause dental and gum issues. Most pets accept it readily, even those who have previously resisted standard toothbrushing.

What is the Emmi-Pet Ultrasonic Toothbrush?

The Emmi-Pet is a handheld ultrasonic device developed in Germany that uses 100% ultrasound, so no mechanical brushing or vibration is required, to clean the teeth and gums. The ultrasonic waves create micro-bubbles in the specialist toothpaste that act on the tooth surfaces and gum line, removing plaque, reducing bacteria and supporting gum health. It is completely silent and produces on sensation the pet can feel, making it suitable even for highly anxious animals.

Why choose a Vet Nurse for ultrasonic teeth cleaning?

Ultrasonic dental cleaning is a clinical procedure and who delivers it matters. As a Registered Veterinary Nurse with a BVNA/BVDA Oral Care Nurse Certificate, I carry out an oral health assessment before every session, grade tartar build-up, check gum health and identify anything that requires veterinary attention before treatment begins.

I have the veterinary knowledge of the anatomy of pet dentition, can recognise the early signs of periodontal disease, oral masses etc, and know when a pet needs referring for a veterinary dental procedure rather than ultrasonic tooth cleaning.

With many years working in practice, I have the handling skills to work safely and calmly with anxious or resistant animals, which means sessions are productive and positive, rather than stressful.

You’re not just getting a device applied to your pet’s teeth; you’re getting a clinical dental health consultation delivered at home.

How the treatment works

The ultrasonic teeth cleaning treatment works progressively in phases, with early visits being the most intensive. As plaque and tartar are broken down over sessions, maintenance becomes simpler and less frequent.

1. Initial Visit – Suitability Assessment & First Treatment

Roughly 45 mintues.

The initial visit begins with a through oral health assessment, and a suitability assessment for the ultrasonic teeth cleaning treatment. Not every pet is suitable to begin treatment straight away, and it is important to be honest about this from the start. I’ll check for loose or fractured teeth, grade tartar build-up, gum ressession, exposed roots and any signs of periodontal disease.

If your pet has significant tartar accumulation, loose teeth, exposed roots or anything indicating moderate to advanced periodontal disease, the Emmi-Pet is not appropriate as a starting point. I will advise you of this, and in these cases, I’ll recommend that your pet has a veterinary dental scale and polish and extractions as required under general anaesthetic first to address the existing disease. Once that’s been completed and your pet has healed, the Emmi-Pet is then an excellent tool for maintaining those results and preventing future build-up. At that point, we can begin a maintenance program at that point.

For pets that are suitable to begin, the first treatment is carried out at this visit, a personalised treatment plan is formulated, and your pet’s own toothbrush head is fitted and labelled (their toothbrush head will only be used on your pet for hygiene and infection control).

2. Early Phase – Intensive Follow-Up Visits

Roughly 30 minutes.

In the early weeks, more frequent visits are needed to work through established tartar build-up. The exact frequency and length of this phase depends on the severity of your pet’s dental disease. This is agreed during the initial visit but may change depending on the results of each session.

Most pets in the early phase are seen weekly or fortnightly until we reach a maintenance level.

3. Maintenance Phase – Ongoing Sessions

Once the initial plaque and tartar have been broken down, maintainence visits keep teeth clean and gums healthy on an ongoing basis.

Frequency varies by pet, typically monthly to every 6 weeks.

4. Toothbrush Head Replacement

The bristles of the toothbrush head are vital in transmitting the ultrasound waves. After a while, the bristles may become bent or damaged and will reduce the transmission of the ultrasound waves which reduces the effectiveness of the treatment.

Each pet has their own dedicated toothbrush head. The frequency of replacement will vary between pets and how often they receive treatment. Those that try to chew the toothbrush head will need their toothbrush head replaced more frequently.

Replacement heads are charged at £10 each.

Emmi-Pet Ultrasonic Vs Traditional Dental Scaling

Traditional Dental Scale & PolishEmmi-Pet Ultrasonic Cleaning
❌ Requires general anaesthetic✅ No anaesthetic required
❌ Carries anaesthetic risk✅ Completely pain-free
❌ Stressful practice visit and stay✅ Carried out at home
❌ Typically £300-900+ per procedure✅ Affordable ongoing maintenance
❌ Needed every 1-2 years if no ongoing maintenance✅ Regular sessions prevent build up
❌ No home component✅ Can reduce need for anaesthetic dentals

Please note: the Emmi-Pet teeth cleaning is suitable for mild to early-stage dental disease only. Pets with loose teeth, significant tartar accumulation, exposed roots, or moderate to advanced periodontal disease will be referred for a veterinary dental procedure before Emmi-Pet treatment can begin. I will always carry out a suitability assessment at the initial visits and will not proceed with treatment where it is not clinically appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Does ultrasonic dental cleaning actually work?

Yes, the Emmi-Pet ultrasonic toothbrush has a strong evidence base and is widely used across Europe, particularly in Germany where it was developed. Ultrasound has long been used in human dentistry and veterinary practices for scaling. The key difference with Emmi-Pet is that it delivers ultrasound through a handheld device without requiring sedation or restraint. Clinical studies and extensive real-world use show significant reduction in plaque, tartar and bacterial load with regular sessions.

  2. Can my pet feel anything during the ultrasonic teeth cleaning session?

No, the Emmi-Pet produces no vibration or mechanical brushing motions that the pet can detect. It operates at a frequency of 1.6 MHz and 96 million ultrasonic movments per minute, but because ultrasound at this frquency passes through soft tissue without sensation, pets typically don’t react to it at all.

  3. How many sessions will my pet need?

This depends entirely on your pet’s starting dental health. A young dog with minimal tartar may move to monthly maintenance visits quickly. An older pet with significant build-up may need several weekly sessions before we reach a maintenance phase. I’ll give you a realistic indication of what to expect at the inital visit after carrying out the dental assessment. The good news is that most pets improve after just 3-4 sessions.

  4. Does this replace the need for a veterinary dental scale and polish?

Not always, and it’s really important to be clear about this. The Emmi-Pet is only suitable for pets with mild to early-stage dental disease. At the initial visit, I carry out a full suitability assessment, and if I find loose teeth, significant tartar accumulation, exposed roots, or signs of moderate to advanced periodontal disease, I will not begin Emmi-Pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning. In those cases, a veterinary scale and polish under anaesthetic is the right and necessary first step. I’ll refer you to your vet to arrange this. Once the dental has been completed and your pet has recovered, the Emmi-Pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning treatment is then an excellent maintenance treatment to keep teeth clean and help prevent the build-up from recurring.
For pets with mild or early-stage periodontal disease, or those who have recently had a professional dental, regular ultrasonic teeth cleaning sessions can significantly reduce the need for repeat anaesthetic procedures in the future.

  5. My cat would never let me brush their teeth. Will they accept this?

Almost certainly better than a toothbrush because the device produces no sensation, no noise and no scrubbing motion. Those than resist conventional toothbrushing often accept the Emmi-Pet toothbrush after a gentle introduction period.
I introduce it gradually at the initial visit, letting your cat sniff and investigate the device before we begin. For particularly anxious cats I can incorporate a short desensitisation approach across the first couple of visits. Most cats are significantly more relaxed by session two or three.

  6. Is it safe for older pets or those with health conditions?

Yes, this is one of the biggest advantages of the ultrasonic teeth cleaning treatment. Because there is no anaesthetic, no sedation, no physical stress, it is safe for elderly pets and those with conditions that increase anaesthetic risk, including heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease and respiratory conditions.
I will review your pet’s health and dental history at the initial assessment and will always flag any concerns. If I have any doubt about suitability, I’ll discuss this with you and recommend veterinary advice before proceeding.

  7. Why is the initial visit more expensive than follow-ups?

The initial visit is 45 minutes compared to 30 minutes for follow-ups, and covers significantly more ground. As well as carrying out the first treatment, it includes a full oral health assessment, a suitability assessment for the ultrasonic teeth cleaning, tartar grading, gum health and periodontal assessment, checking for loose teeth or exposed roots, your pets first dedicated toothbrush head, and creating a personalised treatment plan and home care plan. There is also time built in to introduce your pet to the device calmly, which is important for a good experience from the very start.
If at the assessment I find that your pet isn’t suitable for the ultrasonic tooth cleaning at this stage, the visit fee still applies, the clinical assessment itself takes time and expertise, and I’ll provide you and your vet with a full written clincial summary of my findings and a clear recommendation for the next steps.
